[There's no context and that's the first concern that Tenka has. The second concern is the fact that this is the first time that someone in this world besides Lily has really managed to make the connection that Tenka and Shirasu know each other - but this isn't someone asking about Shirasu, but rather Fuuma Kotarou. The third concern is the fact that Kousetsu and Souza both live with Tenka and Sousei and yet don't know about the one (perhaps two, now) people that can disrupt the peace of their home here.

[It isn't until towards the end of the day that Soramaru came home with a small cake, big enough for the two of them to split, and a couple plastic spoons to eat with. Kicking his shoes off in the door way, he shifts the cake under his arm, peering around corners looking for his older brother.]

Aniki? Are you home?

[He wanted to eat this cake with him, perhaps after dinner unless he's already eaten. He'd been assured by one of the store employees that it was an excellent sweet and a good way to celebrate a birthday. He decides maybe he'll take her word for it considering she'd offered to draw nice pictures on it, though he declines. It was still interesting to him, how different things were done here.]

I was thinking we could do something for Chuutaro's birthday, if you're up for it?

[ souza doesn't talk about his nightmares. honestly, most people don't even know he has them. he doesn't want to trouble anyone, after all; back home, they have more important things to worry about than one sword's weakness. kousetsu and sayo know, of course, but sayo has his own bad dreams, and kousetsu doesn't press him about them.

this is the first night he's had one here, though, and he finds himself jerking awake with a terrified cry in his throat, bitten viciously back, teeth digging so hard into his cheek that he tastes blood. he's shaking so hard it's a wonder he hasn't woken his brother, still hearing the echo of his master's voice. his brand burns, and he presses hands desperately to his mouth to muffle the sudden, overwhelmed sobs. he's exhausted with being so irreparably damaged.

rolling carefully away from his brother's side, he staggers to his feet, slipping out of the room and toward the kitchen. one of them should sleep tonight, after all. --when he reaches the semi-familiar room, he moves to fill the kettle and get a cup down, familiar motions he can do even with a damp face and blurred vision. by the time the water is beginning to boil, he's even mostly calm again. only his brand still burns, a steady reminder of his most fearsome owner. ]

[It's far from the first nightmare that Tenka has had here. Regardless, he's jolting up in his own room, drenched in a cold sweat and his hands trembling faintly as he presses his fingers to his own skin, as if searching for the Orochi scales that marred his body when he first arrived here. It's subconscious. He's not even aware that he's doing it. But he does gather himself enough to release a shaky breath and stand from his futon. Vaguely he rearranges his yukata to settle more comfortably on his shoulders, runs a hand through his loose hair, and gets up to make tea.

Though it seems that he was beaten to the punch.

He blinks once at the unexpected company. When Tenka has his nightmares, he's careful about it -- typically not a sound to wake even Sousei and he's definitely never crossed paths with Souza before.

But his body moves on automatic as he wanders closer to the other man and notices the redness of his eyes and just how tired he looks. Without a word of warning and explanation, he wraps both of his arms around Souza's shoulders and pulls him down into a tight embrace.

Whatever it is, it'll be okay. Tenka will make sure of it.]

A whoopee cushion right on top. Set up in such a way that it makes a sound when Tenka opens the present... ENJOY. MAKE MUCH USE OF IT.

--but no, there're actual gifts underneath that. There's a bartending tool complete with a little list of how-to-use that's suspiciously looks like Hinata's handwriting but shh. And besides that, there's a small karakuri box... He's making Tenka work for a gift, apparently. But, should Tenka solve the puzzle, inside the box is a simple yellow band of flexible metal, something he can clip around a ponytail to keep it in place.

[Sousei didn't really argue him being the one to run out into the snow while Tenka held down the fort. After all, there were people Sousei wanted to check on, and so, properly bundled up, he went out and--]

[It's too loud in the apartment.

It's an odd sort of thing. Sousei really does take taking care of the Kumou children and the Samonji swords seriously, of course he does. He pledged himself to both causes, and he does not take that sort of thing lightly.

But it's too loud for him, even in his own room, and it's giving him a headache (he's found that ever since the event, he's gotten headaches more easily, though he thinks it's just his body recovering from the constant noise), and so he goes to find Tenka.

Not precisely for Tenka in as much as he knows Tenka will be working on the building that he managed to obtain for his bar, and so Sousei wanders in the (conveniently open, unsurprising since Tenka is present) door and dusts off a box to use as a seat. He doesn't see Tenka, so he assumes he's working on something else in another part of the building, but...

Sousei's eyes close and he leans back against the wall, even as he drags in a slow breath.

It's quiet here. (And Tenka is nearby, and that together is enough to leave him more relaxed than he was before.)]

[It's still not what he wants it to be.

The Lake is Tenka's new project. It gives him something to do during the day now in between visits to the kids and then he takes off for his job in the evening and then goes back home to sleep. Yet he's still working, slowly but steadily. There are boxes around that contain cups, packages of tea, and other random things he needs for the actual bar. Furniture is slowly starting to trickle in too, though it's mostly still stacked up in the corner.

When Tenka notices Sousei come in, he snorts.

The next sound that's actually worth noticing is that of a kettle going off, propped up on a small table near an outlet. Tenka dusts off another box to find a teacup and some green tea, making the tea.

Then he wanders over to Sousei's box and kicks it.]

Hey, make sure this tea is good before I try to sell it.

[It's not really a good day.

Sousei picks his way through the ruins of The Lake with a flat expression, giving nothing away. He's talked with Sayo and Kousetsu, and he knows that neither is doing well upon the loss of Souza.

He hasn't brought up Chuutarou to Soramaru or Tenka.

He's not really sure he has the right to, all things considered. They were a tightly knit family, one that had been there for each other from day one, and Chuutarou missing must be a blow.

(Sousei thinks of "You liar!" and his expression goes just a little bit flatter.)

But the wrecked bar serves as a good way to take his mind off of things, and so he really doesn't hesitate to roll up the sleeves of his button-up shirt and start removing debris and wreckage. Back to the drawing board here as well, it would seem.]

[Tenka's working, which is already probably a sign that something's wrong.

Yes, he's been working steadily on The Lake for some time now. Yes, he's devoted a lot of himself to it and wants to see it do well. Yes, The Lake suffered a lot of damage in the tsunami and set Tenka back a couple weeks in his work -- he might be worse off than when he started.

But it's also true that Tenka would still normally be curled up with his family at a time like this. All his kids are safe, yes, but his family still took a blow. Their direct living environment changed, no matter how much Tenka would try to turn up the sunshine even more for Kousetsu and Sayo and Soramaru.

At least when he's working here, he can just earnestly put his mind to that. It's not the same as punching out criminals, but it's something.

When he comes back with a few more trash bags to collect smaller pieces of trash, he raises an eyebrow when he sees Sousei. He... smiles, not with the force of a thousand watts like he'd like, but he is glad to see his partner.]

Hey.

Nothing else to do today?

[Tenka would probably notice. Sayo's been busy planning something for the past while, which he try to keep it a secret. But well, he's not the most subtle sword spirit around, but Sayo will try!

Maybe he heard there's cupcakes involves or not.

Either way, Tenka might find a green tea cupcake on a plate in his room, sitting on a desk. There's a small slip of paper on the plate with a small message on it.

"For Tenka-san.
I hope you like it.
